The Story Behind By Jess Rentals
Hey lovely, I’m Jess - the face (and hands!) behind By Jess Rentals.
I started By Jess Rentals back in 2021, the year after I graduated high school. It all began when I rented a dress from a bigger company and couldn’t believe how expensive it was for what it was. At the time, there weren’t many rental options out there - especially ones that felt personal, affordable, and fun. So, I decided to start my own.
When I first launched, I had just three dresses - a few of my favourites from Tiger Mist and Princess Polly, renting them out for $10–$15. Fast forward to today, and we’ve grown to over 280 designer garments that I’m so proud to share with you all.
What I love most about By Jess Rentals isn’t just the fashion - it’s the community. I’ve met so many amazing girls through this business, and I genuinely love helping each of you find the perfect outfit that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and you. I know how stressful it can be spending money on something that doesn’t fit right, so I always do my best to make sure your rental experience is easy, enjoyable, and exactly what you hoped for.
My goals for By Jess Rentals are simple: to stay competitive, sustainable, and easy-going. I love getting new pieces in, keeping up with the latest trends, and ensuring BJR remains a modern, local favourite for any occasion.
Outside of BJR, I’m 23 and currently studying Accounting and Marketing. I’m a bit of a tomboy at heart - I love rugby, the outdoors, and anything that gets my adrenaline going! From mountain biking, surfing, and scuba diving with sharks in Fiji, to skydiving in Motueka and paragliding in Thailand, I’m always chasing a thrill (and the next adventure).
And if you’ve ever come for a try-on or local pick-up, you might’ve met Buddy, my border collie cross and the friendliest shop assistant you’ll ever meet 🐶
Starting BJR has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve built friendships, dressed hundreds of amazing women, and grown something I truly love. I can’t wait to keep expanding, meeting more of you, and helping you look and feel incredible — one rental at a time.
